You wouldn't know them without Valve. =(
I started playing CS when it was free, provided you had a copy of the original Half-Life.
Beta 5.4 to be accurate, that's when I started.
And then Valve took over and gave us CS 1.0, and everyone complained how the once great game and its great ideas... changed for the worst. But no one remembers the Beta days anymore...
Or grew up with the Valve version, so they don't know how great it used to be. -

First game was Crossfire. A lot of people that played CS talk about it all the time. Never really heard that much about Open Beta. Haha I didn't think they had one -_- -
hmm, interesting but i believe it was the quake engine. brings me back to the ET days, funnily thats a free game that still has a lot of people running servers, more different mods than you can shake a stick at, its old and a bit outdated, but to me it will remain a flagship of FPS gaming, far more than CS, the rush of assaulting a beach under airstrikes and mortar shells raining down, the teamwork needed to repair and build defenses, minefields and so on.
also the fact that hosts could set a minimum ping requirement was cool, so if you played on a european server thats locked to a max of 150 ping... sorted, never see a soul cry about BR laggers.
edit, saying that the new quakewars failed spectacularly compared with old ET. CF would do well to incorporate many of the aproaches to a game... like the bad feeling you get when a medic runs through a hail of bullets to save your sorry arse and then gets splatted just before he gets to you by a mortar shell

Wolfenstein Enemy Territory was great indeed! And it was FREE!
One of the best squad based (with different classes) online FPS of its generation, entirely free..
