Updates and Patches: The Mystery

I've always wondered how patches are made and put into action. Any reasonable explanations/theories?

Comments

  • First, the developers and Z8 agree on content for the patch. Then the developers create/translate the appropriate content and update their resource files, possibly creating an installer for easy application. Then they send the files to Z8. Z8 applies the updated server data to the servers, and allows us to download the updated client data, bringing us the patch.
  • What about the codes and the 3D graphics?
It always amazed me how so much can be put in a computer text file.

Like viruses!!! It has so much code so complicated it can destroy windows itself and simple coding can easily shut down a computer.

... Now I want to talk to Bill Gates...

Just go to your local university... They usually have a huge tech department with a bunch of student and teacher coders. :I

    Basics first. :L
  • like dead said, but i might as well add up.
there's a file in the crossfire folder that's a version file, basically each time you open up crossfire, it check if your version is the same as the last version. if it is, then you go to the game. if not, it patch.
then the installer, its basicly an automatic copy and past program, like if you would copy all your text document from ur usb to your hard drive, except its automatic, from the z8 server and its the game. ( and as you notice, if you past a file that already exist, it replace the old one.)

to crow: it may be an hardward problem.

  • Basically a simple patch, removing and adding new contents or replacing bugs.

How does the game itself work now?

A single game engine, then different text files coordinated to put the textures and code together. :3

  • there's polygon ( pretty much wire frame models.) textures applied to them. the engine ( aka your movements, actions, ect the down right core of the game.)
the texts ( duno what to call that.) which is pretty much a data base of all guns, map, ect. and the engine use that to give you whats available. ( its also connect the polygons, textures, stats and ect of evre weapons/models.)
and theirs the game guard, launcher, and all thos gadgets. it also used for saving settings, and in short, all the numbers and names.
    did i miss anything? :D

but ye, thats about what u would get if u decrypted the game.

I would laugh very hard if the game was actually based on Adobe Flash Player. xD

And the gadgets should have coding in the game itself, like X-Fire. Vent is one example.
