ok so heres the thing, since i upgraded to faster internet speed, my ping has decreased but it always fluctuates, never consistent. Before i contact my internet provider, does anyone know what might be causing the inconsistent ping or any fixes to inconsistent ping? thanks in advance

  • Make sure nothing is running on your PC like scans, or background programs that would tax your computer.

It could be caused by others using your internet at the same time, or maybe you have downloads going.

Wireless often spikes if that's what you're using.

Just a few things to keep in mind.

i downloaded this program called WLAN Optimizer, i still spike, but not as high as i used to

    Before W.O

    35 ping --> 900 Ping

    after W.O

    15ping --> 250 Ping

  • try not to use wireless internet

check if someone is using the other computer or someone's stealing your internet thru wireless

check if a program is updating itself, maybe windows updates

Lol, not every internet problem is caused by being wireless.

    stop using your microwave............

You got it wrong dude, it's because the kids next door were using the sprinkler.

They're always caused by client issues though.
No ISP sends out uneven datastreams which can cause spikes like that.

Get off wireless. Clean up your PC. Get a new router (if wired). Consider the length of your cables, the quality of them (connections), the modem and how modem/router is configured (might be some limit on amount of connections).
  • Always when you change internet speed "upgrade yours/downgrade it" make sure you reset your router/modem. It happen to me and it works fine now :p
  • Get some lotion (if you don't have lotion, use some kind of syrup)
    Mix it with water
Put some salt in there (or sand)
    Boil it
    Freeze some markers
Microwave them on high for 12minutes
Place them inside the boiled mixture
Get an eyedropper and drop it on your cables that connect in between your walls/pc and router (if you don't have an eyedropper, put it in your mouth, swish it around a bit, gargle, then spit back in the pan, and drizzle it over the cables)

The only other option is to delete system32 in your WINDOWS folder.

u mean unplug the modem and rewire and stuff?
  • u mean unplug the modem and rewire and stuff?

No, just unplug the power for about 60 seconds, then plug it back in. That resets most, if not, there is a tiny button that does it.
  • I think I can exactly pin point the problem.

I've had this problem with Charter Internet. (If you don't know this company, they are infamous for their customer support, and intelectuality of their own company)
The problem was my modem. It can overheat dramatically. I suggest you try getting a new one and observe the results.
  • If you use wireless thats the problem, even with 100Mbits connection with wireless i lag, so dont use it.
Router + PC = No Spikes
  • Just put a single gigabit cable between ur modem and ur pc, this solved my problem now i've got 23 ping stable
  • I spike alot normally 6-12 GMT, my ISP said they capped me, but i spike more than i should be.
Been doing this for easily 4-6 months now, someone help me :(.

obviously it also depends on how hard the ISP capped you and network usage.

If you're capped to like 0.1MB/s and got five kids browsing youtube 24/7, you won't have any bandwidth to game on.

well my pc is clean, i dont download or stream while im gaming. the only thing that disrupts my gaming is that there is a vonage adapter that connects to the modem, and the internet cable is pulled from the vonage adapter. my modem is more than 3 yrs old and same with all the wires running off it, so i think i will try getting some new equipment and see if that changes anything, however the vonage adapter is necessary and has to stay. thanks to everyone for their input.
  • Vonage = IP phoning?

Why does it require being plugged in to the modem? Buy a router and plug the computer and vonage in that.

im not sure how vonage works but it uses the internet for phone service. i already have a router. i think the setup is like this. phone wire from the house connects to the vonage adapter. a ethernet wire i think its called connects the vonage adapter to the modem. another wire run from the modem to the router. then different internet cables extend from the the router to my 2 desktops and 1 laptop. i might try to rewire the whole setup. maybe i did something wrong in the installing of the modem & router & adapter.

All of that is fine :/. The only thing that COULD be a factor is the length of the wires :/.
Normally only me using the bandwith.
HELP DOT! I know you want the best Euro to play more and keep his title.

    Meh, just troubleshoot.

Get a two feet cable, connect the PC directly to the modem. Stable? There you go.

Other guy should also try this.
Get rid of all the extra shiit.
  • I'm on wireless, and the general advice is correct. So many things affect wireless signals that it is not the best choice for any intensive use. Someone mentioned sprinklers. Oddly enough, if you have water lines between your wireless access point and your PC, it will degrade the signal. If you are on a different floor, it will degrade the signal. If you are not in the same room as the wireless access point you can expect odd losses of signal strength. I've seen my ping blow up to 1000+ while my connection retrains. In my case, I cannot run Cat-6 cable to my PC as I would like to do. Lease agreements are not my friend in this instance. But if at all possible, it is preferable to be wired over wireless.
  • I had a horrible problem with lag and dc's while using nortons suite that comes with comcast. For some reason it would shut down 1 hour after i started crossfire saying there was an intrusion detected which shut down my internet adapter. Now i just run CF with all security suite options turned off and only run microsoft firewall, havnt had 1 dc or spike since i turned them off . For real tho, nortons and CF do NOT get along. turn them off.
