First of all, ghosts hate shotguns.
Second, type 89 if you want to spare your ears.
Third, fast shooting and reloading weapons. High prescision won't help you unless you're a player specialised on GM and having sharp enough sences to notice ghosts from across maps if they move slightly. G36K, Tar 21, MP5, MP7, UZI.
Fourth, NO slow reloading weapons if you're a rookie. NO slow shooting weapons if you're a rookie. Forget about Steyr AUG, K2, Scar Heavy. Reloads are the moments when ghosts like to attack, and if you're not good enough to make sure no ghost is around you, do NOT use slow reload guns. -

Should I buy a low ranked gun now such as the M4A1 or MP5, or wait till I am ranked high enough for a gun like the G36K? -
Honestly, it's way easier to use M4A1 than G36K. But G36K got an enormous advantage in CQC, making it more valuable for ghost mode. You can buy an M4 or an MP5 right now. I would also suggest a good secondary. When you rank up to Staff Sargeant 1, you will receive some additional GP to buy a new gun, and by that time you can decide wether you like or not the G36. If you want to try any of those guns in battle, do not hesitate to whisper me in game, as I am on right now (but won't be on for a long time after I log off). The in game name is DeathEffect.

Winchester is NOT for rookies. It lacks the shotgun area of effect, and still reloads as slowly as one. Won't suit a beginner. AK-47 can be used, but not the best weapon for begginers once more. It's loud, it's rate of fire isn't that much elevated, and the reload speed is average. High recoil isn't that much of a problem against closeranging ghosts tho. XM8, M4a1, G36K.
All excelent guns to GM.
But MP5 is good choice to. If you dont want any of those upper, use MP5. Its easy to spread if a ghost jumps on you and you get in panic xD
And it hasn't a loud noise. Even if you're a sprayer those 30/120 its pretty usefull.
