Router causing ping spikes.

I have a router and modem. Ever since I hooked up my router my ping will spike from 50-1000+ for about 2 seconds then drop back down to 50. This happens about every minute. Any tips or suggestions?

are u wireless or wired? ...

if wirless make sure nothing metal near the router if its sitting on metal put a thick book under it or sumit...

if its wired.... lemme know wot router it is please
