Macroable Buttons

To anyone who has a mouse with macroable buttons [pretty much any gaming mouse] have you been able to assign or set an action to said button? For example, making a side button let you quickswitch, or letting the scroll wheel make you jump?

If not, is their a program that would force this [make the scroll wheel assigned to the space bar, thus in game you could use the scroll wheel to jump].
