how is it a lan when you don't have a lan client aka LOCAL AREA NETWORK
it should be called mwgtpirl
mwgtpirl = meeting with gamers to play in real life
and lan when there is a lan client -

not troll, he makes a perfect point...
I used to host urban terror and unreal 2004 lans as well as quake 2 back in the day.... i ran the server on a dedicated system and had about 10-15 friends over we all jacked in a bunch of daisychained hubs and wala!!! a lan party!!!..... every one gets equal ping and u are truly playing a lan game.
NOW, if we had all jacked in and then connected to a remote server to play..... it would be very HARD stretched to call that a lan party... despite the fact we were in the same place the server would be remote...... we could have accomplished the same thing by just staying at home and using ventrilo.......
IF CF made a lan client,, or a "server we could run on our own systems", Tru lan play would be possible. untill then its still web play but just being next to the people we are playing with. (not really a lan party) -
I'm sorry, wherein lies the major difference between playing on a remote server (at which you'd still pretty much get equal ping) and playing on a local server (at which you'd also get a close to equal ping)?RendoRazor wrote: »not troll, he makes a perfect point...

I LAN for the social aspect. If I wanted to sit at home in the dark talking on vent, I would, but that hardly qualifies as a LAN. -

not much, but lan implies self contained network, as in all aspects (the server and the players) are on the network. "LOCAL" area network. granted most Lans have a web gateway but it does little to change my point....
i guess it boils down to this, LAN partys have been going on for a long time. What, like 16 years?
The advent of non dedicated gameservers in fps games (and by nondedicated i mean those that are ran by a company ie combat arms/crossfire AvA... OR those that work on Instance based (matching systems) is still new... they dont even provide the users with ability to host their own server.
here is an even better way to put it.... Tell me where it says Crossfire is playable over
Lan.... it does not, infact if you google it there is plenty of reviews and descriptions saying the exact opposite. or any game for that matter that has a online playermode but no prepackaged server client.... it does not, Why? cause as far as the developers of the games are concerned, "we dont give you a server program, you can't host your own server, so it is no a lan playable game"
You can call what you do a Lan party, but it is kinda like the Br's who say that low pingers lag.. Just because you don't understand it does not mean you can call it something
its not. i mean no disrespect, and in time as the lingo evolves it might come to encompass your understanding of the word, but for now it is simply wrong.
