Fraps FPS Lag.
So, I was trying to record some replays. I was able to record 2 clips yesterday with Fraps, and I was definitely pleased at the quality & FPS.
Because I want good quality to work with, I am stretching my computer slightly. I'm using almost maximum nVidia optimisations for these clips, recording in 1440x900 (so it can be cropped nicely to 720p), at a somewhat consistent 24FPS. I have an ASUS laptop - GeForce 9300M, Core 2 Duo @ 2.26GHz, 4GB RAM, VISTA. I'm recording to C:/ - it only has around 18GB left. However, the change in space would only have been 2-3GB max from the 2 clips.
Today I used the same settings, same computer. I was only able to record at 12 FPS. Is this because I am running out of space on my C drive, and therefore I should use an external HD? Would anyone suggest another program that would not suffer such fluctuations in FPS?
I don't really want to lower the quality - most vids I see have horrible 720p (and at least on SV, I was liking mine), and I WAS able to record yesterday - it seems my computer is at least capable of doing so.

An external HD is always good for movie makers with little space on their internal HD.
The change in FPS is probably some programs open that are using up your CPU. When you're recording, try to close programs such as Ventrilo and Xfire, etc for optimal FPS. -
I thought the same thing at first. I've spent 4 hours trying to get this to work. I ran GameBooster on both occasions, and closed some additional live updates today.
I do have a network HD, I guess I could disconnect that and use the USB port. Should I record to an external HD, or record to the internal and transfer files to the exHD? -
Your hard drive is a STORAGE.. Check and see what your processor is. and your amount of ram, also video support..I have a new computer without a graphics card. I get a good 120 fps. I have an AMD Athlon II x2 235e at 2.70 GHz. Fairly decent processor, with 6.00 GB memory. I can record in-game at 80 fps with no lag.

I stated my processor, RAM & graphics. A lack of storage space is a potential reason for Fraps to slow down - I believe it isn't the issue because I didn't lose a significant amount of storage in the past day.
Again, I was able to record at a consistent 24FPS yesterday. That was smooth, and looked fantastic. I'm not getting a hardware upgrade because Fraps decides to play up when it feels like it. -

Better to record to the external HD, that way you don't have to hassle transferring large files.

It won't slow down Fraps? I've always thought of USB connections as slower, and therefore thought 1.7GB for 2 minutes of footage could be an issue.
Use growler and set the fps to rcord at 20 and set the resoulution to the same as your game and you wont get lag. it will look like this.

No graphics card bub..
Or this one..

have to agree with Vap0rizer, i also like using growler more then fraps. i tend to get less fps lag with it then fraps and the quality is the same (as with fraps, depends on your recording settings)
and when i record videos, i usually record it on the internal harddrive, then putting it on the external, since USB connections aint the fastest, but you can give it a try if u want... -

fraps = beter quality cuz of the codec in it.
and btw... check ur cpu usage when ur recording.
maybe its the heat -
Why would I record at 20 FPS, when videos are usually finally rendered in 24/30FPS? If I do choose an alternative recording software, it will probably be PlayClaw. I downloaded the trial - it has compression, and from some searching, people say it's quality than Fraps while losing less FPS. I just need a way of getting $30 for free, if you know what I mean.Use growler and set the fps to rcord at 20 and set the resoulution to the same as your game and you wont get lag.
That's what I thought. Should sustaining 20GB of free storage be okay if each clip I'm recording is around 2GB max?and when i record videos, i usually record it on the internal harddrive, then putting it on the external, since USB connections aint the fastest, but you can give it a try if u want...
Yep, and I want the quality.fraps = beter quality cuz of the codec in it.

Thanks for actually giving me a lead to follow, I'll check up on it. What would I do if it turns out I'm overworking the computer? -

same sht happens to me, one sec ill be gettin' 40-60fps, next moment I can't get above 10. :S FRAPs is very moody lol. Only way I ever got it to work at all was to set the priority to low and affinity to one cpu instead of 4 (or however many you have) -
Forgive me for asking the noob question, but I assume you're limiting the fraps.exe here?same sht happens to me, one sec ill be gettin' 40-60fps, next moment I can't get above 10. :S FRAPs is very moody lol. Bump, now it seems my CrossFire ingame is lagging. I've tried reducing all the nVidia settings & running GameBooster, resetting both computer & modem, no luck.
Any suggestions? It's a Vista ASUS laptop, 4GB RAM, Core 2 Duo @ 2.26GHz, nVidia 9300M graphics, ~18GB storage left in iHD. I recently installed Sony Vegas & a nVidia driver update.
