Actually I was at school. We got let out early so I took a bus home.

I would rather have a 1g ddr3 for more money rather than a 512mb.

I realize this. It is also memory clock speed and what not. But I am pretty sure it will perform better than that other one. Good fan and stuff... ya know

2GB is pretty much standard

I recommend 1GB at minimum for basic day to day use especially if you plan on running games.

The recommended amount for a gamer is 4GB though I only run 2GB myself.
Another affected aspect of the amount of ram you have is the amount of dedicated video memory you have.
If you have a 512MB -1GB Video card you can squeeze by on 1GB so long as its NOT on vista which you should have at least 2GB for

You can run xp or windows 7 on 512 MB of ram with a OK video card however you'll have issues with not having enough memory and running your processor wide open constantly causing a shorter life for it as well as instability ion your system.

are you upgrading or building a new system, I can point you towards good name brand parts for really cheap

2GB of ddr2 pc6400 in ocz platinum (it overclocks well and has low latency as well as extended voltage protection) is like 50$ and ddr3 is close to that

You may find these benchmarks to be fairly useful in making your decision between the two cards. They seem to perform quite similarly with the 4850 and the 9800 swaping back and forth between the games that they were tested on.
