  • Spain-
Well, the most attractive, flowing team to watch. Very few weaknesses and all-around the squad very talented with plenty of replacements.
I'll start with their attackers. Torres & David Villa will storm the front as normal. Torres is just back from injury so he'll probably be taking it easy in the opening games. Plent of pace, brains, brawn and an eye for goal. These duo will be hard to stop.
The midfield of Spain is just amazing. When a player like Fabregas can't break onto the first team you know that they must have a very special team. Got plenty of options to mix and match if neccesary. Xabi Alonso or Sergio will be the engine of the team. Covering the back 4,playing the safe passes and starting attacks by feeding the ball to the more attacking midfielders. Xavi,Iniesta and Fabregas ,we all should know about. 3 of the best passers in the world, and Iniesta and Xavi have a great partnership. Will be hard to shut down throughout the tournament. Pedro ,David Silva, navas and Mata have great pace if needed on the wings. Can use either feet and have the eye for goal. All very fast, tricky players.
If there is a weakness to be found in the Spainish squad,i'd have to point the finger at Casillas. He's had a weak season at Madrid and with pressure from fans and Victor Valdes might make some screw-ups. Sergio Ramos and Arbeloa are probably better known for their attacking threats and might be found wanting on the counter-attack if there's any way to find a goal. Spain are also a relatively small side, and could be under threat from corners and free kicks, especially against phyiscal teams like Serbia,Italy or possibly England.

Obviously Spain are the clear favourites to win,but have huge pressure from fans and media in spain. Might be a factor in their minds.
  • France-
Need to cheat to win. LOOSERS.

  • i'm beggin fo the final GermanY:England.

And then we win, because there'll be no second wembley-goal. :D
  • It'll be Netherlands or Spain I am sure :)
  • Portugal don't look a force this time round. Carlos Queiroz is a pretty useless manager, and managed to finish 3rd in la liga when real madrid had the ''Galactico's''. Nani has also got an injury which is a HUGE blow. Ronaldo and Simao are the only good attacking threats which they have, and Ronaldo will have to be on top form if they are to get close to the quarter-finals.
The defence is shaky. Carvalho is a good defender, but is missing the speed he used to have when he was young and will struggle against rooney, luis fabiano etc. Fererria hasnt played much for Chelsea and doesn't look like a good defender any more and is low on confidence. Miguel is more famous for his attacking ability rather than his defensive skills. Pepe got injured early in the season for Madrid and mightnt be on top form. Good all round defender and will be looked-up to in the dodgy defence of Portugal.
The midfield looks only average. Deco had a horrible last season with Chelsea and has lost his sharpness due to age and isn't the same standard as Xavi,Gerard etc. Was a great player, but just gone past it. Tiago,Raul Meirellas,Pedro Mendes and Veloso are all only average players and not good enough to be likened to other good midfielders around the world.
After the retirement of Ricardo-Portugal have failed to replace him with a respectable keeper. Eduardo is poor and will leak goals against top strikers

I think they'll get to quarter-finals or semi's if they're draw is VERY lucky. Would be a huge shock if they won but i wouldnt be optimistic.

    Nice screen shot lol
If France were even to make it to the quarter finials everyone would bring up this image.
  • Netherlands are handicapped without their star player Robben who's been amazing for Bayern this season. Unfortunately his bad hamstrings giving him trouble again and might be missing the whole tournament. Van Persie is still one of the best strikers in the world and will be their main source of goals. Huntelar was once listed as the ''next Van Nistellrooy'' but that has never materialised. Good in the air, good goal sense but hasnt 'clicked' and found consistency. Kuyt is a hard worker, but isnt talented like other strikers. Babel is low on confidence but has a lot of potential, skill and pace. Great super-sub.
Netherlands will be relying on Sneijder. Top-class passer, great set-pieces,good vision and excellent long range shooting. Will be the architecht of any dutch attacks and is a fantastic asset. Van Bommel is the trusty-consistent warrior. Will run and run and run,put in tough tackles and break up the play. Great leader for holland and is crucial to their chances. Van Der Vaart is another great player, very similar to Sneijder but I think plays like Kaka with that ability to find the bit of space and give the killer pass. Excellent player.
Their defence is ok. Not very impressive but the dutch style of play is to keep the ball, not be put under presssure. Not much speed as they've had the same defence for the last decade. Tall and physical but might be caught against small, fast players like Lennon or Messi.
Their weakest link is Stekelenburg in goal. Not anywhere near the experience or talent of Van Der Sar. Can make some crucial mistakes and might be the difference between winning and loosing.

With the inclusion of Robben i'd think that they could challenge Spain & co to win it but without him i think they might miss that threat and cutting edge in the final third.

Portugal will probably face Spain in the round of 16, its Portugal or Brasil, but i bet it will be Portugal

  • I'm just gonna do my personal favourite team next and do Germanty,Italy,Brazil and Argentinia later. If you want me to do another team just ask!! I love giving my views on footie.

My favourite and whom i think is the ''dark horse'' is Serbia! One of the greatest defences in the world with some amazing players. Vidic and Ivanovic are the two most famous with blood & guts tackles and two unbelievably tough players. Less known players now are Kolarov,Subotic and Obradovic all young and technically and pysical great players. These trio are stars of the future i'm sure.
Stankovic is the most famous of the midfield.Good all round player and very trustworthy. Jovanovic has recently signed for Liverpool and has a good eye for goal. Big threat. Tosic is one of my favourite players and I watched him many times for Man Utd in the reserves. Is one of the stars of the future. Great left foot and is a key player to assist Zigic up front. Krasic on the right is also one to watch out for and played well for CSKA Moscow in the champions league, attracting attention.
Serbia's biggest problem is their lack of goals. Zigic (the Serbian Peter Crouch) has great ability in the air,and a good right foot but often looses concentration and is very unrealiable. Pantelic has had a good season at Ajax and hopefully he can continue his form. Again, isnt the most trustworthy of strikers and doesnt have great pace.
Stojkovic is probably the worst of all the Serbian positions. I havent seen him play much at club level which isnt a good sign. Hopefully the Serbian defence will save his a$$ again and again.

I'd be over the moon with 4th round with Serbia but i think they'll give some teams trouble. They have a tought group but i'm hoping they'll get through. 10 euro in Paddy Powers that they will win the world cup :P Unlikely but i'm hoping!!

didnt notice this thread till now but sports (in particular football) are my expertise. Here's my personal favourite teams and the top teams whom i think will do good or bad.
England- For the UK cf community. I think England COULD do well with the right team. Lampard doesnt mix well with Gerard, and since gerard is now captain as Ferdinands injured I think one of them has to go. Milner is seriously under-rated. If he was at Man Utd,Chelsea or Aresnal last season and played with them as he did with Villa he'd be starting. Just he's at a smaller club. Fantastic player but i dont think he'll be starting as Capello will pick the same old team.
A lot of pressure will be on Rooney to work his magic considering the other strikers England brought are useless. Crouch is good for England, but I don't think he'll do good against tough, strong defenders(vidic, puyol, cannavaro etc). Defoe had a poor end of the season, and him and Rooney don't mix. I won't even start on that eejit Heskey. For Wayne to flourish,England need to start Lennon. His pace and crossing are crucial and to get good deliveries & server to Rooney. Then the goals will fly in.
I hope Hart starts in goal, but i doubt he will. The most talented by far,but the least experience and I think this world cup has come too soon for him. I think Green will get the spot since he's been consistent and solid.
I think they'll get quarter finals or more-but will not win.

Lampard can play with Gerrard, but only when Barry plays. This means either a 4-5-1 or a 4-3-3 with 2 wingers either side of Rooney instead of 2 other strikers (I would have Walcott as one of them as he could do the right wing/stirker role really well................ Nice one Capello ;) )

  • I'm torn between a lot of different favorites.

I'll be cheering for Spain (was there last year, beautiful country). Denmark (part of my family heritage), England (London being my favorite city in the world), Netherlands (Van Der Sar being my favorite player) are all on my list to put flags out for though!

I'll be happy with pretty much any of those teams getting out of the RR.

Walcott didnt make the squad thankfully for england. He's really fast, but has horrible crossing. Wright-Phillips and Lennon are the right wingers in and Lennon is amazing but hasnt played much recently since he was injured at the end of the season. I'm guessing by the quarter-finals England will switch to a 4-5-1 with Barry being the holding midfielder and Gerard & Lampard being the other two centres. I'd prefer milner to lampard and i've already named the reasons. Cole and Lennon will probably be the two wingers. 2 great players.

Except for Spain and Holland. :)
  • Brazil-
Brazil-the most succesful and famous footballing country of all time, throwing out legendary names like Pele,Rivaldo,Dunga,Ronaldo etc but now people look at the team and the sexy style of football and the flowing football with world famous attackers are gone. People have written Brazil off from winning the world cup yet again, but i wouldnt-not yet and here's why:
Brazil's manager,Dunga, has reversed the traditional style of Brazil. He knows he doesnt have the talent in his squad to play like the generations previous so he's changed it around. From pass and move to counter-attack and soaking up pressure like the azzuri(italy's famous style of defense,e.g. baggio era). Off course, for this tactic to work you need a rock-solid defence with organization and good experienced leaders on the pitch.
The foundations of the defence starts with the keeper,Julio Cesar. In my eyes, this man is the best keeper in the world. Great reactions, reads the game very well, kicks well with both feet and commands crosses and corners. Has had a brilliant year for Inter Milan and was key to their treble success.
The main man of the back 4 is Lucio. The tall, strong imposing centre-half is an all round blood & guts old fashioned defender. Will throw his body at anything threatening his keeper, totally dedicated to his job-defending the goal. Great in the air, fantastic last ditch tackles and all round very solid. Organises and leads their team extremely well. Lucio's partner in defence,Juan is very similar. Very tall, physical, fast and great tackling. Can cope with the best strikers in the world. The two options for right wing-back are probably the two best wing backs in the world. Amazingly,Maicon has kept Barcelona's star Dani Alves out of the side. Both of them are better known for their willingness to sprint up and down the right side, and are probably better at attacking than defending. I believe Maicon has made the cut for his extra pace.
Dunga likes to put more defensive protection in his side. Dunga's brought a selection of defensive midfielders with Kleberson,Gilberto Silva and Josue who sit and patrol in front of the back 4. Sometimes Dunga even plays all 3 defensive midfielders at once showing how key they're defending is. Julio ''the beast'' Baptista,Kaka and Elano all have the same purpose. To make the key passes,do classical brazillian mazy runs taking on defenders and scoring goals.
Now,to brazil's frontline-what they're most famous for in international football. Luis Fabianho is the key man, scoring most of their goals and being the main threat. Like Rooney,he has the pressure of a nation on him. Good all round striker, with pace, bulk, power, good finishing(with his head and feet) and can score from all area's. Robinho is the other main striker famous for his pace and ability to run with the ball, and take on many defenders. Nilmar and Grafite have also been brought, but wouldnt be considered as ''top class'' strikers.

Althought their play isnt very exciting,it is very effecient and has proven to be successful. They're able to keep out top strikers such as Torres,Villa,Rooney etc and so is the reason i would never rule them out. Also with the threats of Robinho,Luis Fabianho,Kaka and co up front theirs always a pressence up front to score a goal or two!
  • Italy-
    - The current World Champions! As always no-one ever rates Italy as favourites but they always end up doing very well. They were like 5-6th favourites last world cup,but they have lost some amazing players like Matterazi,Nesta,Del Piero and one of the best players of all time,Totti. However, they still have great experience and talent left in the side. Now I will tell you why i still reckon they have a chance of retaining their title.
-As always,Buffon will be the safe hands in goal. Great penalty stopper aswell if needed. One of the worlds most consistent and best keepers with great experience and like all Italians,is crazy.
-Ahhh,the famous Italian defence. Throughout football history they have annoyed many teams with their ability to soak up 89 minutes of pressure, but then counter-attack for that important goal. Like last world cup, they have the legendary brick in defense,Cannavaro. He lacks his old pace, but is a wily old fox and knows every trick in the game. Really intelligent player. Beside him is his protegy,Chielllini. I see him as a younger version of Maldini and is just amazing. Those two can keep out the best attackers in the world. Zambrotta is a dream for any coach,he can play on either side of the backs with two brilliant feet. Will bomb up and down either side, putting inviting crosses into the box asking to be finished.
-Italy have again a great selection of defensive midfielders. Gattuso is famous for his tough-tackling and De Rossi also has a reputation of making sure that the player feels pain when he's tackling them. Pirol, the Italian version of Paul Scholes. The maestro of passing, long range, short passes, through balls - all perfectly weighted and easy to control. Set piece master aswell. Camoranesi is another Italian ledgend. Not one of my favourite players, especially since he's got older and lost speed but he can still whip in some great crosses from the right. One of the stars of the future-Riccardo Montolivo. I'd recommend looking out for. Great skill, excellent awareness and control and good finisher from long range. Scored many time for Fiorentina and even scored a goal 117 km/ph!!!!
-After loosing an era of one of the best selection of strikers, who have ''the Azzuri'' replaced them with? Italy have brought two big-frontmen in Gilardino and Iaquinta. Gilardino is a player i like watching. Dangerous in the air, good movement and is a big game player. The main other two strikers, smaller and more versatile, are Di Natale and Quagliarella. Di Natale is very technically gifted and a big goal threat. Very good at sniffing out a goal. Quagliarella is a very talented striker, but never seems to be able to link up well or find consistency. He shows flashes of brilliance, especially in all aspects of striking but has never shown his true colours.

Do not ever under-estimate the italians. They always look dodgy at the start, but grow into the tournament when it really matters.

Edwin van der Sar to be given official farewell

Manchester United and Holland goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar will be given an official farewell by Dutch fans on Saturday.

Van der Sar will be presented to fans at the Amsterdam Arena before Holland’s game against Hungary for a final goodbye. While the Dutchman has agreed to play on next season with United, he turned down an offer from Holland coach Bert van Marwijk to take the No1 spot for the World Cup.

At 39, Van der Sar is the record caps holder for Holland with 130.
