XTRAP + BitDefender Problem FIX

Hello everyone in this post I will address an issue I had while trying to run Cross Fire on my Windows 7 Ultimate x64 machine with BitDefender Total Security 2010 installed in hopes that I can help others.

Initially I tried to run Cross Fire and got the following error...

So I then looked around for a fix and found CrackinDomes' instructions which were this.
Here is the fix:

Step 1.) Disable your Anti Virus Software and Virus Scan Software.

Step 2.) Uninstall Crossfire.

Step 3.) Restart your computer.

Step 4.) Disable Anti Virus and Virus Scan Software again after Reboot.

Step 5.) Find your Download Folder(My Documents/Downloads) and find the setup file you downloaded from z8games.

NOTE: If you don't have original download. Re-Download from one of the mirrors.(http://crossfire.z8games.com/downloads.aspx)

Step 6.) Make sure Anti-Virus and Virus Scan Software is Disabled.

Step 7.) Re-Install Crossfire.

Step 8.) After Auto-Patch runs launch Crossfire.

Step 9.) Enjoy!

Sure enough this fixed the problem however I have found that many people are upset at the fact that they have to completely disable their AV application. For BitDefender this is not necessary at all. What you need to do is go to the AntiVirus category and then the Exclusions tab. Once here add the following directory to the exclusions list...

32-bit OS location - x86:
C:\Program Files\Z8Games\CrossFire

64-bit OS location - x64:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Z8Games\CrossFire

Now go to the shield tab and pull the Protection level meter down to "Permissive". While this will limit your protection to some degree you are still offered some of the important antivirus features like.

-Application Scanning --for those worried about virus attacks from 3rd party applications
-E-mail Scanning --not sure why you would need this while playing but you're still safe!
-Virus Scanning --no brainer

Keep in mind that this is only the minimum protection you should be getting and that when you are done playing you should increase your Protection Level.

Hope this helps someone out there. If I screwed up and put this in the wrong place or a mod or someone else deems it useless feel free to delete/move. :P

  • I have BitDefender also. I found that a much easier solution is to just right click on the BitDefender task bar icon and hit Game Mode. Shouldn't interfere with CF after that. (at least for mine anyways)
  • Well after using your method I must say that works a lot better than mine xD thanks for your reply. This method works because it does basically the same thing I described above except for adding the exception of cross fire files to the list but that appears to be unnecessary.
  • Bumping, might be a potential fix for the 529 error some people, including me, are having.
