When starting out a sentence with a number, you have to actually type the number. Like as in, "Two spots left." Not "2 spots left". In the middle of a sentence, when typing a number, until the number ten, you type out the number.

Actually, most teachers teach that you are supposed to type out the number no matter what, if it is under 100. In other words, "Hyphenate all compound numbers from twenty-one through ninety-nine." Too bad I'm too lazy. Sue me.
Also, if you want to get technical, it wouldn't even matter. "Use numerals, however, when the number modifies a unit of measure, time, proportion, etc.: 2 inches, 5-minute delay, 65 mph, 23 years old, page 23." I.e. 2 spots would be a unit of measure. -
