I am currently in the process of investigating this error. So far it appears that it is due to high server loads. I was assisting someone with it earlier, and after trying to start the game 5 times he was finally able to join.

I did a packet capture on his connection while logging in and it looks like the process stops when the game tries to connect to the HGW/Xtrap server. One thing that you can try is to make sure your router is forwarding port 16666 to your computer.

I will post information in the Known Issues section when I have a definitive fix for this.
