My first FPS was DooM and I still play it tons today. It's funny after almost 20 years since it's release.. it is still one of the best FPS games ever made. In my opinion though, it is the best FPS because it had everything you would ever want..
Awesome soundtrack that included midi versions of songs from Metallica and Slayer..
Check
Awesome array of weapons including the beloved chainsaw and double barrel shotgun.. Check
A great cast of enemies and different monster to blow the f#ck up.. check
A massive amount of levels spanning not only the original three games(NOT DOOM 3.. I'm speaking Final DooM as the last good DooM game), but all of the user made and third party content (Anyone remember D! Zone map pack, Demon GAte 666 pack.. that included.. 666 new maps, and the grand daddy Demon gate later released with 6,000 more maps.. yes making 6,666 maps all together.. not to mention all the user created content.)
An awesome mod community. Come on. Mortal Kombat DooM.. SIMPSONS DooM.. SKULL TAG and that list goes on and on.. Absolutely check.
DooM simple said, is the greatest FPS of all time, I mean heck even the DooM clones have done really well (coughhaloseriescough). I still play every now and then today. And with the Dday Engine that allows full 3d mouse support and downloadable skins to make doom look atleast more along the lines of Half-Life 1 graphics.. it just makes it all the better.
However,
My first entrance to online gaming was Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six. Absolutely one of the best online FPS I have still ever played.
You have no health bar, you can not spray, and you will die in a few shots. It always made for some fantasic MP matches, not to mention the great leagues and ladders that spawned (OGN, CWN, EGN). I really miss playing, because when it started fading out, the fps world started catering to noobs and being very carebear (See Rainbow Six 3 on xbox.. and every Rainbow Six game released since).
But from there I went to Counter-Strike.. and well after about 10 years and making some good history and great friends, and tons of amazing LAN experiences. I'd say I had my share of fun
