need some help =)

well recently ive stoped rifling to snipe competatively in snd. but now im having slight issues with my rifling. simple and forward question, tips on strafing when long range rifling. my aim is fine but with rifles such as ak/m4 im having strafing issues and issues strafing while shooting strafing targets.

Thank you,

(and i expect to get mass amounts of baddie comments because im having such a simple issue but at least im asking for help instead of flaming people^.^)

Pain.

  • om nom nom nom nom, post on this thread or i will eat you next after my samiach!!!
  • i guess no one knows how to strafe and minds giving me some tips in a area im lacking =(
  • i don't rifle but hope this helps

dont strafe. STAND STILL AND SHOOT
    :p

    jk
gl bro i dont rifle much as i said.
  • yea me either. its one aspect im having trouble with. i typically snipe in snd. i do fine with guns with higher stability, k2 and qbz.
  • read it. im gonna with a ak but i find i get killed before my oponent does when strafing. my crosshairs dont open up. im just having a hard time hitting opponents strifing. should i just keep my crosshairs head level and keep tapping hoping for a headshot? thats my main issue strafing trying to kill other strafing players
  • Nah with the M4 you should walk and start at the high chest area and let the recoil push the bullets up for a headshot. I went 19/3 in S&D this way. I dont use the ak much but whne i do i stand stil and shoot in 2o3 shot bursts because the recoil is crazy, that is when the enemy is far away. for close up with either just spray at the high chest and you'll almost always get a headshot.
  • For the AK tips, just read all of Malte's AK47 guide. I improved so much from it.
  • lol i have read the ak guide. ive been aking for 7 months. the ak itself isnt the issue. i can control it very well. my issue is hitting strafing targets while i am strafing. A situation such as im at barracks long a on BW and he is at A plat. both are strafing. i have trouble hitting him in that situation thats more my issue than the weapon itself.
  • try to match hes strafing speed with yours?
  • thhanks for the tip. any other would be much appreciated ^.^

In this article, I will address the important topic of gun control. Players often ask questions such as “When should I use this shooting style over that one?" That is exactly what this article seeks to analyze. Rather than demonstrate the superiority of one style over another, I will attempt to show how each style is useful in different situations. First I will define 3 shooting styles, then I will examine the concepts of mobility and damage. Finally, I will apply these concepts to the shooting styles to construct 4 fighting styles.

    Shooting style definitions:

Tapping – This is accomplished by tapping your mouse button instead of holding it down, firing off one bullet after another in rapid succession – traditionally 3 with the AK-47, 4 with the M4A1, for accurate bullet grouping.

Bursting – This is accomplished by holding your mouse button for the fraction of a second needed to fire a quick burst – traditionally 1-2 shots with the AK-47, and 2-3 with the M4A1.

Spraying – This is accomplished by holding down the trigger, compensating for recoil by pulling down and side to side.

I will discuss mobility and damage to help the reader understand the use of these styles.

    Mobility

A moving target is harder to hit than a stationary one. If you've ever played CSDM, you know that a target strafing at full sideways speed on your screen at almost any distance is a nuisance to hit. The reason why experienced players recommend tapping and bursting over spraying is this: you stay mobile, and make yourself harder to hit, provided that you strafe in betweens shots. However, by strafing a lot, you make it harder for you to hit your opponent, because you have to compensate for your own movement when aiming. You can get better at this with practice, but it's also true that your damage over time is reduced, because you spend a lot of your time strafing rather than shooting.

    Damage

Regardless of the benefits of mobility, if your opponent does more damage to you than you do to him, he wins. In CS, a game where being stationary equals accuracy, being crouched equals more accuracy, and accuracy equals damage, there is always a fine balance between mobility and damage, between survivability and killing power. Balancing the two is the key to a successful fighting style.

Using the above concepts, I will construct 4 fighting styles you can practice.

Full Dodge (Mobility: Best, Damage: None)

Why would anyone want to give up shooting altogether to become a target (albeit a very fast-moving, hard-to-hit one?). The answer is: team play. There are situations where you have to make yourself the moving target to bait the opponent's shot so that your teammate can take them out safely. Imagine the apartments on de_inferno, you and another Terrorists are inside wanting to come out balcony, but you know there is a CT in the pit. The first person in line has to go full dodge or else you'll get mowed down one by one. The most effective tactic here I've found is for the person to bunny-hop out to the left on to the apartment boxes and out into the air. His only goal here is to make himself as hard to hit as possible so while the CT wastes his time trying to kill a flying monkey, his teammate can come out and kill the distracted CT with relative ease. In summary, use full dodge when:
-You're in a team situation where the enemy has good defensive positions and you need to set up a trading of kills. See my article on teamwork.
-You're in a team situation, you are out of ammo, and the enemy is focused on you. Start doing a little dance and they'll whiff so many shots that your teammates will take them out!
-You need to escape, or get somewhere quickly and taking out the enemy is not your priority.

Burst and Strafe (Mobility: Great, Damage: Good)

The Burst and Strafe fighting style is a great balance of mobility and damage. Using 1-2 shot bursts with AK-47 and 2-3 shot bursts with M4A1, one successful burst is enough to kill an opponent with a head shot. You're also pretty hard to hit since you're strafing even longer than you would be with the tap method. Use this style when:
-You're in a 1v1 duel with an opponent at medium to far range, but especially far range.
-Your opponent is shooting at you and need your best chances of winning alone (no team backup.)

Tap and Strafe (Mobility: Good, Damage: Great)

The Tap and Strafe fighting style is a good balance of mobility and damage. One tap is enough to kill an opponent with a head shot. If you aim for the body, it might take two taps to do the job, unless you tap slower. Of course, stopping for longer will reduce your mobility, so find the right balance! Use this style when:
-You're in a 1v1 duel with an opponent at medium to far range, but especially medium range.
-Your opponent is distracted or has their back turned to you. You don't need mobility when they aren't shooting at you!

Crouch and Spray (Mobility: Worst, Damage: Best)

The Crouch and Spray fighting style is an imbalanced fighting style, favoring more bullets at the cost of making yourself an easy target. Use this style when:
-Facing multiple closely grouped targets at close range.
-Wall-banging with no expectation of retaliation. When wall-banging, all that matters is damage and the ability to blanket an area.

You can create your own styles too, with your own balance of mobility and damage. The best place to practice different fighting styles is CSDM, check out our article on CSDM by KTH for more info. Well thanks for reading, stay tuned for the next article.

o wow thats a nice guide.... too bad its directed towards cs... it still helps though

and my tip for strafe firing, fire at the end points, right before you are about to start strafing the other way, i find this easier since u dont have to compensate for your own movement
  • ahh very very useful. i think my was issue was that I was trying to shoot while strafing, instead of stoping shooting then keep moving.
  • When you get to a corner stop for a second so that your crosshair resets then peek.

And when I'm on a full run and need to take a shot I tap my shift key as I shoot so that it resets the crosshair.
  • yea, im fine with peaking. I snipe typically so i excel at long range rifling, peaks, and head picking. It was more counter strafing but ive already noticed a increase in ease of hitting a target when i stop at the end of strafes to shoot.
  • Action through inaction friends, Action through inaction.. I probably didn't mention it enough in my guide but NOT moving will actually help you with the AK as opposed to strafing or strafing the same amount as your opponent (TRY IT). Do not waste your time thinking about his strafing pattern and trying to match it. Instead, use your controlled spray to your advantage and let the bullets go off, it's that simple. I stand still when I spray, and look at how far it has gotten me. Don't be scared about people having better aim than you.

    - Never crouch, especially with the AK ( a great player who knows his AK will never need to do this in Crossfire in particular )

    - Never, ever, ever strafe. I have killed the best players in this game without pressing a button besides mouse click. If I can do it, YOU can do it.

    - SIDE STEP when you are long range. Make sure your cross hair does not open up due to your movement.. It should only open up when you are one tapping at an increased pace. At this pace I am almost at the same speed as an M4 strafe and bursting,, basically matching it with a constant flow of bullets without the downtime of strafing in between.

Just a few pointers. . Take everything else anyone says with a grain of salt, because to be honest with you there is nobody who has used this gun as extensively as me, and that is a fact.

    You're my hero.
  • I'm going to be honest with you (:
    rookie server with an m4
    only headshots
    is great practice :)
    no lie
  • thanks for the advice malte, and gratz on the win. next time i find myself in that situation il just relax and try to focus on picking the enemy and spray em down.

and m4ing isnt the issue julian, my aim is fine. it was more a mobility. i preaim at the head so a majority of my shots are headshots about 70%.
