Iraq invaded Kuwait. The US intervened to get Iraq out of Kuwait, as it was an oil-rich nation friendly to the US, which they did. So they won or acheived what they set out to do. They never had any intention of getting rid of Saddam as it would have caused "unrest" in the Middle East.
In fact, Bush called on rival tribes in Iraq to rise up against Saddam, to hold Saddam's troops in Iraq and not have them fighting Americans in Kuwait. One tribe did, Saddam needed air support to supress them. But he didn't have air support as the US Air Force had all his aircraft grounded/blown up. So Bush gave Saddam permission to use helicopter gunships to blow the living **** out of the tribes town and suppress the rebellion. For if the rebellion had suceeded, and Saddam been ousted, there might have been more "unrest".

It's all pretty similar to the North/South Korean war, American forces took HUGE losses in that war, but continued regardless.

North Vietnameese vs South Vietnameese. U.S supported South but pulled out of Vietnam and The north won soon after.
