What does clan points represent?

I have a question, I just started a new clan and i saw some of my friends who have lower ranking (sergeant 4) overall get more points (27 points) but the higher one (staff sergeant 5) has less points(8 points). We didn't have a clan match yet, how's that? Just out of curiosity.
