How do I use my guns…?
First off, this may be a fairly long post – if you don’t want to read it, then please don’t!
In a slightly backwards manner, the point of this post; rather than asking what guns I should get, I actually just did a little research then went out and got some guns that I thought looked fun or having used a little I really liked. I would therefore like some advice on how and when best to use these guns!
Background
At this point I should point out I am a complete beginner! I have never played a FPS before, and have only been playing CF for a few weeks now. However I am really enjoying the game (much more than I thought I would) and I am really keen to learn how to play and get better at it!
So anyway, I wanted to enhance my enjoyment of the game and figured I’d drop some cash in to the game and get some items and guns – even at the risk of being called “that noob with guns he can’t use” (I’m an adult with 2 kids and a mortgage – being called a noob in an online game is not really going to bother me too much to be honest, I’m a bit past that
).
So I dropped in about 150k ZP over the last week or two (equivalent to buying a couple of xbox games so no biggy in the grand scheme of things). I got myself the SPOP char pack with 100k GP, another 120k GP boost and then dropped the rest on crates – most of which for the Kriss (I never got the Kriss, but I did end up with enough coupons to get it anyway – and lots of GP for other crates too lol).
To cut a long story short, with a mixture of good luck, bad luck and just plain frustration I have ended up with the following collection of guns that I now intend to see me through the game long term:
Guns (and a couple of ‘noobish’ observations from me)
M4A1 – pretty standard GP gun (also have the M4A1 Adv, for a couple of weeks as a by-product of the crates) – nice enough gun to play with and seems quite easy to pick up and use, so definitely one I will always keep in my inventory, but not the most exciting of guns (strange thing to say but hopefully you know what I mean).
XM8 Adv – My first crate gun and a mighty fun one to play with. I seem to do ok with this as long as I keep reminding myself not to sit with the scope on all the while. Seems to be a quality all round gun.
AK-47 Silver – Bonus points make it an obvious choice to own. Have only used a few times and seems nice and powerful, but lots of recoil, not so ideal for a noobish ‘sprayer’ like me. Have read a couple of guides on here and would like to learn how to use it more when I have got more of a grip on the game.
AUG A1-Camo – love the scope on this, and seems a pretty easy gun to use – however early observations are that it’s not very powerful so I don’t get that many kills. Am I doing it wrong? lol
Kriss Super V – My favourite gun, but also the one I seem most incapable of using effectively! I think it’s probably quite easy to spray and kill when you get the knack, but right now I’m not really achieving anything with it
What are the best games / situations to use this gun in? Should it be kept to short distance combat, or is there a knack to longer range kills?
Desert Eagle – a tidy hand gun, which feels much nicer to use than the colt which I have tried. Would really like to get the camo version – probably the only additional thing I will try to go for in crates (about 200 down so far and no sight of it
)
Have some other non-permanent guns as a result of the crates, but not overly interested in playing them right now. So basically I have 5 main guns (excluding the handgun) – which may be 4 too many really, but hey I’d like to learn how to use them all and use them for different scenarios / moods etc.
So this is my gun set, I would just really like if possible some input from the community on how best to use them! I realise there is a lot here to answer, so if anyone has bothered to read all this and can make some observations that would be much appreciated. In particular I would really like more advice on how and when to use the Kriss, XM8 Adv and the Aug A1 – these are the guns I’d really like to master if possible!
Oh, and for what it’s worth I’m mostly a S&D player, though I enjoy TD and a bit of Elim (but not much Mutation or GM). Guess this may make a difference in terms of what is the best gun to use when.
I know that a lot of it will come down to practice and experience with each gun, and generally learning more about the game – but I’m working on that! In the interim I’d really appreciate anyone who takes the time to read and give me some feedback or advice.
Cheers in advance,
Teddy.

all depends on your playing style....
try to stick to one gun and learn its recoil and spray.
as a general rule dont just hold down left click, fire bursts of about 2-3 shots.
try strafing in between shots, and only shoot when the crosshair has gone back to its normal size...
if i may direct you to the crossfire -> barracks -> guides section, im sure youll find a lot of more helpful guides for any manner of gun there. -
Lol i dont know if i am going to help you at all, but i would recommend this:
- learn spray patterns of your favourite weapons - handy in close combats
- learn to aim for a first shot, see how fast it can get ready for another precise shot => timing of precise shooting
- watch youtube videos - there is a lot of tutorials and frag videos which can give you a lot
edit: lol i see i was a bit late, thraxi wrote most of things i did seconds before me
-
I recomend just playing lots of public matches and getting good(sorta like i did) you will get the hang of it in a few weeks/months. And as for using the guns i recomend from far distances to shoot 3-5 bullets(hold down left click) because any more that that is very inaccurate and 3-5 bullets is normally enough to kill.
If you want to try out different guns before you buy/start to use them try playing an alaska or crossroad game. VERY Helpful to see which gun to get. And you dont have to wory about breaking the ones you already own.
Hope i helped a bit ^^ Cheers -

i've tried it once in a whole match, it's awesome -
MikeDaSpike wrote: »i've tried it once in a whole match, it's awesome
it is quite awesome, master that gun and its 3 shot burst and headshots will be raining down...
skip kriss once you get good enough, its just about the easiest gun to use
and if you want a challenge, master that ak... -
u put in zp when u just start playing.....
fail
Last time i checked it's up to me what i do with my cash.... you pay to go to the cinema, or only after you have seen the film a few times and decided you like it?
Surely i don't need to play for 2 years before i decide i like the game do i?
Leave the 'fail' out numbnuts.
As for everyone else, cheers for the input. Very much appreciated.skip kriss once you get good enough, its just about the easiest gun to use
So is it not really a worthwhile gun to have? Makes me wish i'd held out on the coupons for the gold eagle lol -
I sort of agree, also I am damned not to be able to buy stuff over the web atm and my mphone is broken so you make me jelious ... alot

I work hard all week, and am well paid enough that should i want to stick a few quid on a game to enhance the enjoyment for myself i can do so. No qualms really... you can pay to play or not.... -
1. Dont play search and destroy if you are a rookie , because you often play against good players and you cant practise playing that much . I guess TD is the best mode for rookies ( maybe zombie mode as well).
2. Dont play too much with Kriss. If you really want to get skill you have to play with ak 47 / 74, m4 , xm8 , k2 , qbz , aug or awm .
3. Dont listen to the guys who say that its stupid to buy zp. They are only a little jealous... -
Sup? I'm Fin. So before we start I'm just letting you know I'm not the best at this game, but I'll give this a try, and I do have some exp playing with all of these guns. So I'll try and help ya out
AK Silver- First off the silver is the exact same as the regular, or so I hear, and the only difference is the 5 extra ammo per clip. For the AK47 I would suggest learning how to burst, preferably 3-5 shots. At really long range I think 1 shots are the best, and close range I prefer to spray, but that might take practice. So your probably gonna have to practice the 3-5 burst, and one shotting. Your just gonna have to practice your aim on your own. I like it for all situations
this is a great guide for ak btw
http://forum.z8games.com/showthread.php?t=26491
Stery Aug Camo- I find the stery aug is awsome, yet I find it limited to long range only. The scope is ideal for one shotting, and the only thing I can tell you of how to get that down is to practice, really now other way. I rarely find myself using an aug at mid or close range, but I unscope and try to burst with it if I do. I think that this gun is ideal for long range situations, and would be good to carry a pistol for CQC
Desert Eagle- MAKE EVERY SHOT COUNT. That is basically what you should try to do with a pistol. 7 shots is more than enough to take down a guy. I find the best situations to use it in are when ur either reloading and the enemy strikes, or when you need to run somewhere, and taking it out makes u lighter. It also good for snipers, and would be handy for your aug. Best way to use it is to spray body shots(remember every bullet counts) or learn to one deag (one shot to head) That your just gonna have to practice
XM8 ADV- Okay I do own this gun, and first of it is very fun, yet probably one of the most deadly guns too. The best part about xm8 is that it does 100% damage through walls. This can help u get campers, and is just awesome in general. I would say this is a great spraying gun at CQC, and and I like to use the ak burst with it also. Long range I wouldn't suggest one shotting, but maybe a 1-3 burst, and perhaps a 4-6 burst at mid range. It has smaller recoil than ak, so bigger bursts are better. The scope can pick up a few headshots, just learn how to control the recoil. (watch this if u need to learn http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AhLWgyW2uC0 )
M4A1-^^read above. I use m4 the same way I use xm8, only difference is no wall power
both are great for every situation
Kriss- This is basically a spraying gun, but the accuracy can one shot with practice. This in my opinion is great for rushing at it's best. Don't own one, so I can't give you that much info sorry.
Well that's my guide, hope that helped. (btw this is based on my playing style, there are a couple good guides out there for some of these guns too) -
Okay here comes my words of wisdom!
First, you need a computer
Second, you need a mouse
Third, you need a gun
Fourth, You need to aim a gun at the person you want to kill
Fifth, Hold down the left mouse button to shoot
Sixth, If that doesnt work u fail! -
Kriss is a good weapon but only if you are rushing. It is only great on close quarters play. For example I rarely use my Kriss on S&D and I leave it for TD. Scar Light, M4 and the AK are best of S&D. Scar light is the best choice if you are looking for a balanced gun. You have to learn to get head shots and to control the recoil. You have to follow you team and know the maps too. The most important thing is to learn the spray pattern of you gun and don't spray with guns like the AK. You have to learn to burst your shots so you can get more head shots.
Good luck -

Superb, thanks for your input, that's just what i was looking for. Also big hat tips to aggrokillas and MonsterInx, some really useful points too, thanks a lot.
I have been mostly using the XM8 and Kriss in my bags over the last few days, and have to say the more i use the kriss the more i love it. But i am concious of what aggro said in terms of getting too used to it - after all you can spray all day with that thing and still get kills
So i am splitting my time between that and the xm8.
I think i must be improving (if only a little bit) as my KDR is starting to average out towards level, as opposed to the 0.3 i was getting before :P Considering getting one of those stat reste things - to start again on the stats thing - or is that frowned upon? I think i can improve a bit on the huge amount of deaths i was getting when i first started out lol
I take your point about the aug too - the scope makes it great for mid to long range, but not sure i am quite mastering the cqc with it. As i still have a tendency to spray i am steering clear of the ak for now.... but once i am more comfortable with the other guns and bursting i will definitely be getting the AK out for some fun
Thanks again for the input fellas, given me a good few points to take forward with me.

No problem, that took me a while to type too :P and kdr reset is not frowned upon

If you really want to start taking your game to the next level, I recommend buying an AWM. As a beginner, TDM matches will give you the most experience (not XP) because interactions with the opposing force happen quite often. Over time you'll take the accuracy you've gained from TDM (hopefully) and take that into S&D game where you'll develop a higher level of gamesense. I'd also recommend joining a clan. It'll make your overall experience more enjoyable and you'll probably pick up a thing or two from your teammates. You didn't mention your sensitivity, so I'll throw out some "average" numbers:
Un-scoped: 10
Scoped: 25
Like I said, those numbers are what I would consider average and by no means are set in stone. Furthermore, they're a couple CS guides that could pertain to CF as well, TAO-CS/World Of Pwnage. Google them, they cost money but you shouldn't have a problem torrenting them. -
ak-47: hard gun to use; my style is to strafe ~3 steps left and right and i shoot, 3 burst shots, at their head when i am at my right side, aiming while im at my left side. this works best on stationary targets, if they are moving around, i think its best to move in a way that keeps them visible, and stop whenever you need to fire
this is for med-long range, if it is cqc, if ur good, and their bad, take about 2 seconds to 1 click their head, if they are decent spray em down -
So anyway, I wanted to enhance my enjoyment of the game and figured I’d drop some cash in to the game and get some items and guns – even at the risk of being called “that noob with guns he can’t use” (I’m an adult with 2 kids and a mortgage – being called a noob in an online game is not really going to bother me too much to be honest, I’m a bit past that
).Teddy.
Teddy I hear ya here, except 1 kid. Its cool you like the game, and you got the guns you wanted. I am almost in the same boat.
Guns I have been using are the Aug1 Camo, tommy gun, M4 and Ak Silver. I am by no means half the talent as some of these kids out there, but i dont care because i have fun. I would say play with gun you like, if you can play halfway decent with the kriss out side of close quarters and you like it go a head and do it.
I like use the Aug Camo, and will pull out the Ak and the Tommy Gun too as i picked up a 3rd bag. I thought the the M4 was similar to the Aug, but i liked the scope option so i went with the Aug. i plan on getting the xm8 when i hit the level as i dont like the yellow color of the xm8 adv and dont feel like risking any more on crates. I also have a deagle camo, but prefer the anacoda reg. Just more fun to use in my opinion.
I find that if i use the ak for a while my kdr sufferes a little, but when i go back to the aug it makes better with that gun and i can get a decent kdr of around 1.3. Again no where near the level as some people, but i am ok with that.
As far as maps and modes i like playing both snd and td. SnD definately has better players and makes your more disciplined, but you get less playing time. I usually split my time between the 2 and try to play power plant, mexico, and fortress for td match as it forces me not to revert back to spraying and praying like you can do in egypt or on ship.
Anyways hope this helps and let me know if you see me around in the game.
