  • Can you guys copy the link and see the question?
  • I'm going to leave your thread up, but please stop bumping it... In the mean time, it will help if you read your textbook. :P
  • 1. Y= -2/5x +1/5
    2. Y= -5/8x + (9/8)
    3. Y= -1x + b
    4. Y= (2/9)x + 59/9
  • iAnarchy is completely correct. Here's some clarification.

    1. When you plug in the two points (-7 for X and 3 for Y) into the linear equation Y = mX + B, you end up with 3 = 14/5 + B. B ends up being 1/5. Plug back into original equation.

    2. Same thing. Take you X and Y values (-3 and 3), and enter them into the Y = mX + B equation. They give you "m", so solve for B, then re-write the entire equation with X's and Y's.

    3. Here are two tips to solve these kinds of problems:

    a) Pick either the X's or the Y's and focus on those two numbers. Imagine a number line, with the middle at 0, extending out both ways left and right. Imagine where those number will be on the timeline, and count the space in between. Repeat for the X's or Y's, whichever you havn't done yet.

    b) Pick either the X's or the Y's and focus on those 2 numbers. Take the highest number of the two, and SUBTRACT the lower number from it. If the lower number is in the negatives, the subtraction will turn into an addition. Repeat for the X's or Y's, whichever you havn't done yet. Take the value you got for the X subtraction and put it in the numerator (top of fraction). Take the value you got for the Y subtraction and put it in the denominator (bottom of fraction). Simplify if possible.

As iAnarchy says, the slope is -1.

    4. This is the same kind of problem as 1 and 2. The only difference here is that the slope (m) is changing. A perpendicular slope is always the negative INVERSE of the original slope. The negative inverse of -9/2 is 2/9. Plug in X and Y as explained above.
