Ghost Mode Tournament (NA-UK)

Hello guys,

It's been awhile since a GM tournament was last hosted.

So we thought we could host one (The we would refer to UK GM players).

The prize isn't much for now since there is only one person willing to fund it but that may change.

I'm just here to ask for suggestions, ideas and I wanted to know if there is anyone interested.

It'd also be nice if anyone from NA communicated with me to help hosting this tournament so we could make it satisfying for both NA and UK GM players and it'd be great if any of the MODs who likes Ghost Mode also came in contact.

We know there have been problems between both UK and NA communities lately, so let's try putting the crap aside and just have fun playing the best mode in CF that exists in no other game.

This is Ubiquitous. from Impalpable (AKA: Apathy.) Communication is the best tool to solving problems, so please communicate.

Everything on this post is due to change depending on what the community suggests.

  • Wrong section, but it's cool that you're doing something for the community. Last time Andrew attempted to make a GM Tourney only 5 teams signed up, so GL.

I'll happily contribute with a team of NA players.
  • You wont find enough players to make a decent tournament. If Andrews tournament was pushed pretty hard back when he tried with some decent prizes and that failed outright, there's no way people are going to come back for this. Only way I see anyone making a comeback for this is for another MOTG... You have good motives, respect for trying, but honestly don't waste your time...
Let the GMs figure out how to revive this mode.
They get paid to do it.

    Edit:
The problem in hosting an NA/UK tournament is that it can't really be fixed. Naturally, ping is the killer. Literally the only way I can see solving this is to play and entire BL/GR game on NA, and do the same on UK, and then average the score between both. Otherwise one team will always be at an disadvantage due to ping. And in doing what i suggested, imaging a game being tied. Good luck redoing two more games to figure that one out.

And I mean, before we even do that, we can always open up a sign up thread and see how many teams sign up. Pretty basic 8 teams would be enough, 5 mains + 2 subs (yes, 2... Seen too many teams not have their sub able to fill in, though we got around that through other means ;) I mean what....) 8 team x 7 players = 56 players. Get that and i'm sure this can happen. If you open a signup sheet and it goes well i'll be happy to either play and/or overwatch games. I'm sure Andrew and Moe would be willing to do the same...

    Best of luck.

  • Welp I'm not sure how this will work out but I'm down for supporting however I can. That being said I should be a free agent for this tournament, so if any teams need a +1, hit me up.
  • I don't think its possible to play NA vs UK in a tourney since the lag issue is to big like this number_2 guy already mentioned. But on my own i always support things like tourneys and as fast as there appears a detailed sign up thread i will pick up some guys and form a team out of UK Players. GL with it.
  • Also there are a few players from NA that would probably still be interested, but you'd probably need to give a general idea of the desired date of the event.

hey buddy stay off this game, became a hell of a lot better when you left, cya
  • I'd be interested in playing or making a team, but i'd need a date and time before I can even think of committing.
  • I'm glad that people actually replied to this and sorry about the delay, I was a bit caught up with my uni. We can always open a singup sheet but then as others mentioned, when should that be played? I generally have time almost every Saturday and Sunday for the next let's say 2 months? So we could always try to arrange it. 2 Saturdays in a row could do the trick, since not everyone who plays CF has a vacation on Sunday (Most of the people I know from UK don't). So the date is up to discussion, and I'd say we could open a singup sheet were those who are interested sing up knowing that the date will be decided by them. As for the 2nd issue about games between UK and NA, if we have enough teams from both server, we could split the tournament in two divisions with the final being NA Vs UK or if that doesn't seem appealing, then yes a full game on each server with the ties being settled in a 1v1 (full game in each server) and if that also led up to a tie then it's up for the teams to decide how they wanna settle that tie and of course the Overwatcher or whoever in charge. But yeah, that's only an idea which is pretty debatable. I'd still wanna know what you guys think about the rules of that tournament. What should be allowed and what shouldn't be? A GP tournament or a normal scrim-rules one? Or something custom-made? Would be nice if you answered with details on the last two point (the gear and tournament-system).

Well generally speaking the gear has been scrim/cw rules for the last 2 years with almost no exceptions, so that would probably be the safe pick. However, I wouldn't mind a gp rule set if you can get enough support for it. Overall in regards to gear, the scrim rules would likely bring a slightly larger turnout than the other rule sets, unless you work out something everybody is happy with.

As for the tournament set up, I would recommend that you make the bracket random. While NA vs UK finals is generally interesting, these tournaments should be made without any bias, and as we all know, these 2 regions have had a lot of unnecessary beef in the past.

The only problem with a random bracket is that it'll take longer since instead of there just being 1 NA vs UK match there will likely be more (it's longer because its 1 game in NA then 1 in UK).

That is definitely a notable point, but at the same time if there are more UK teams than NA or vice versa then that will be a problem regardless. And personally I want the chance to play against other competition I rarely get to play against in pubs (which might happen anyways if a UK team decides to pick me up). While it is more time consuming, random bracket add's more variety to the experience imo. But it's not really up to me to decide, and I'll be happy if we get a tournament regardless.
  • A gp only tournament would be super interesting to see. Safest choice is always scrim rules though, typical axe/bd vs silencers... Also I like Anarchy's proposition with set NA/UK brackets and then finals would be an NA team vs UK, but that in itself requires and even (lets say in an 8 bracket) 4 teams from NA/UK.... It also gives an unfair advantage for one to be a harder than the other. Random brackets, while longer to deal with, are safer and fairer.
  • You guys are pretty cool to be honest! If people really showed interest we might double the original prize. So I think we could start a sign-up sheet and the teams that come out could be the ones deciding this. So I'll be making a new thread in the Ghost Mode part of this forum (I hope this would be a correct place) for the sign-ups and I'll link it here. I'll try to explain there what we said here and I'll link this over there as well. Thanks folks, guess the GM community is in a lot better shape than I thought.

Wowowow Brad against the world. Where's my popcorn ;)
  • Hopefully this will help you think of something ^^

This is just an idea, but you can try creating a spreadsheet with times on it and let teams sign up for a current time to play during the tournament. For example, you would have a time sheet for NA players and a time sheet for UK players and the team that have matching time would play against each other (make sure that it is UK vs NA players). The winning team would go to the next round and you just let the winning team pick a time that would work for them for the next round. If there is an even team winner on either side of UK or NA, you can let people on the same server play. Instead of choosing a time for them because it might not work for them, let them choose a time. You can probably do it Saturday, that should work out for almost everyone unless they have family problems going on or events happening. Night time might be the best.... GM players are vampires or nocturnal.
