What happened to Open/Pro?
I've been thinking alot lately about what can help improve the competitive scene for CF.
Thanks to an old WOGL necro post I wondered why no one uses the Open/Pro style?
I wasn't active with the CF Comp scene when WOGL was around but I did notice that there was more positive activity from the Open/Pro.
Having 1 tournament for all teams is like mass suicide for new teams. They would get rolled and don't want to come back. Having Open and Pro would help split it up and make it more balanced. Then we would have 2 tournaments that would have teams of the same comparable skill level competing against each other.
Asking a new team to play a team like Socks or Kanata is like jumping into shark infested tank.
I would like to know who here think there should be Open/Pro Series?

Wogl Pro wasnt a huge success. It only had like 5 teams if I remember right. Plus Kanata and Socks don't play online events that much anymore, so I doubt they would even sign up. Since those 2 teams don't play online unless its for a LAN there is no new team that can't work there way into a decent spot with a little practice.
The game was new and fresh back then, and Wogl was wanna of the first league to come to CF and do well with the community for a while. Its not bad with the current to have 1 event, seeing as at the moment there are only around 32 teams worth of players on the competitive side. Even ESG will be a surprise to get over 64 in sign ups even with the 500$ prize. Of the 64 (If they get that many), over half are most likely no shows / non NA Players who wont read the rules. -

Well I would assume that Open would have a small prize like ZP and Pro would have Cash. -

I played both seasons of pro that you couldn't buy your way into like season 1.
Each season there was atleast 8 teams in it if i remember correctly.. All active. -

I just dont see 8 teams that could easily be in that right now. You have socks and Kananta and then a few that can keep up with them, but aren't likely to win. The rest aren't even able to keep up at this point. -
newf4gs...
really miss the old 1 game a week, u were either terrible and played open or good and played pro, and there was always alot of talk about the pro teams. made it really interesting.
now you get kids who make threads on alts saying "top 5 teams" and list their own. then argue to the death to prove that they beat socks 7-5 that one half while playing ct on a ct sided map
life goes on i guess.. -

Well I hope there is a way to re-energize that.I just dont see 8 teams that could easily be in that right now. You have socks and Kananta and then a few that can keep up with them, but aren't likely to win. The rest aren't even able to keep up at this point.
Well ask yourself, is there really a reason for teams to make an effort right now? -

Which matters why exactly? Look at the invite division of ESEA, there's like 2-3 teams that are much better than everyone else, does that mean they should be the only teams in invite? -

True. I miss watching the Wogl Streams of teams like LL and Trio going at it. The match on Downtown I saw was what made me decide to stick with the game. -

No.. You just dont see the same top players you have seen the past 2 years..
Those players have either quit, or are currently banned.. -

Well If there isnt that many good teams, it doesn't make that much sense to throw in 5 teams with them who will get stomped, than let a team worse than those 5 and the 3 top go win Open. Im not saying It couldn't work, I just dont know how 8 teams could be decided when there really isnt a ton of active competitive teams right now. On top of that, barely any team holds a roster for more than an event or 2 anyways. -

There would be move up and move downs I'm assuming if there were to be an open/pro division again, it's not like those teams would be sitting in pro forever even if they do terrible. Top 2 open teams advance to pro while bottom 2 pro teams get moved down, should keep teams motivated enough to actually practice. -

Yeah but if there is only 16-32 active teams online. Kanata and Socks not even playing in online events right now. Is it the best Idea to split them up? -

Id say there's around 32 active, maybe 10-20 more kind of floating around..
I would like to do this,
Use open to bring in new clans, let them use whatever guns/characters they want. The winners of open can have a choice of changing to a pro rule set as well as getting the change to play pro/play for cash prizes.
BUT that only works if we can get a good amount of teams.. -

The 8 teams are so are decided from the previous season's results. Hence there would be no "pro" the first season. -

5 teams. no. lul. getout. -
The way to get more better players is to have a league that isn't garbage, an organization trying their best to make CF Comp the very best it can be, ESG is doing a pretty solid job so far. Also the pubbing in the game is terrible so if there is a bigger competitive player base the players can just pub out against eachother I suppose. A lot of old school players are still hanging around just not playing the game. ESG should try to get standings and stats for the leagues they host as Zzxq has said because it brings out more professionalism and it's appealing. The players need to start advertising the game at a competitive level somehow as well, make the game look appealing to play

Things like that makes me wish I was more active when WOGL was around.
There is no reason that "good times" cant come back.
There can be good times again. An organization can't do that alone though, there has to be support for those things. At the moment, it's not realistic to do an Open/Pro League until there is a more established base of consistently performing teams (hopefully through ESG). 4 to 5 teams isn't grounds to divide into an Open/Pro League, it's just that simple.
I'd love to revisit some of the things that were done at WOGL for the record. I'm not saying it can't be done. The teams and players have to step up and become consistent. Show G4Box that you guys are serious about these things. Be more vocal about it. Maybe we can get somewhere with it all. -

I understand what you are saying but you have to realize that you cant expect teams to pop up out of the blue.
You have to give them a reason to compete, a reason to get better and stay together as a team longer.
Other than Prizes, the Open/Pro division setup would really get people talking and create more momentum for the growth of the online competitive scene.
