Is this why I upload while downloading ? (Uploading is slower)

That's just how torrents work, you are downloading from loads of different hosts at the same time. Why it's so popular for illegal content.. Impossible to track host in most cases (because its many people)
Yes that's why you upload whilst downloading, you then become a host for that file, and people download it from your PC.
It will effect downloading speed, and yes you can stop it (I advise it too). Idk what programs you use, so i cant tell you how to do it. normally you just right click the item in list, and select (Max upload speed .. ) and set it to 0.
Something like that anyway, I don't use torrents anymore. They are illegal, traceable, use a lot of bandwidth, allow others to access your files, etc, etc.
