After the Autumn Assault was complete and the winner was declared to be clan 'Trio'. We had an opportunity to ask a few questions from their clan.
The following is a short interview with Kahlan and Bunz about CF, The Autumn Assault Tournament and their match with clan 'Sorry'.
Pre-Tournament
Cross Fire: How did you all start playing Cross Fire? Were you friends from other games or in real life?
Kahlan:I saw an ad on another game forum and it looked similar to Counter-Strike and decided to check it out. CrossFire ended up replacing not only CS, but all my other fps games as well. I told uMaD1to10 about the game and soon him and his brother uBad* started playing with me. The rest of us came together from random places.
Bunz: A friend introduced me to CrossFire when we got bored of some other games, I was hooked after playing it.
Cross Fire: How did you decided who would represent Trio as the 7 man team to participate in the tournament?
Kahlan:Before we started picking up other people, Trio was mainly a small and friends-only clan, most of them coming from other clans like FGT and [F]reedom. Anyone in Trio could have placed but we chose the most active, mature members as the starts and sbus. Bruce was a lucky pick-up before the tournament began and was able to help us through the early rounds.
Cross Fire: Does your Clan use any outside means of communication? Other than the Buddly/Clan lists in game?
Kahlan:Not all of the clan is tight-knit, but everyone who plays in Trio has access to our Ventrillo server. In addition to Ventrillo, we use MSN and X-Fire to communicate and in some cases we even have the person's phone number!
Tournament Questions
Cross Fire: What were your thoughts when you found out you would be playing Clan 'Sorry' in the finals?
Kahlan:We pretty much figured if we made it to the final round we would be playing Sorry, so it wasn't much of a surprise in that aspect. We knew they were going to be a strong team and we were worried about what kind of surprises they might have brought to the match. Their tactics and in particular, [D]weeze had us worried that the finals were going to be a tough fight.
Bunz: [Bunz puts it well when he said]; "I was worried about [D]weeze and their strats."
Cross Fire: Did you practice for the Championship Round (or any round)?
Kahlan:We didn't intensely practice each round, but we still made time to play some rounds with friendly clans like FGT and aDr. We mostly practiced tricks and tactics with grenades, and camping spots and rushing tactics. For the Championship Round we really only had time for one practice game about an hour before the actual match. But we Pub and PuG on Black Widow a lot so we are all familiar with the map.
Cross Fire: What was your specific strategy on Black Widow? Do you have any tips for other players?
Kahlan: As Global Risk, our main strategy was to hold the sites and cover each other. If one person died we would replace them and attempt to hold the line of defense. When 'Sorry' focused on one site we would move to flank as a top strategy.
As Black List we never had a true strategy, the main goal was to pick off 'Sorry' players and rush to plant. The key we used as BL was speed and rush tactics. Once the bomb was planted we could move to a defensive strategy as we did when we played as GR.
Competitive play in CF and other games is about trust in your team mates and help covering their backsides. I believe that simple strategies executed correctly and strong teamwork and communication are the basis for a top team. Keeping it simple and communicating well ends up being much more effective than complicated plays that require precise timing.
[Bunz chimed in with a great line at this point.]; "Camping is a legitimate strategy."
Cross Fire: Does your team have a certain weapon load-out to handle certain situations or do you have any personal preferences on some types of weapons?
Kahlan: We usually enter a game with four rifles and a sniper. Sometimes we would use two snipers when Bruce subbed in for us. Trio has never forced a teammate to use a gun they don't want to, as long as they perform just as well with whatever they choose to use. Personally, I like to switch between different guns a lot, but the advantage of the m4a1-adv with its +5 bullets and silencer is just too good for a map like Black Widow.
Cross Fire: Will you be participating in future tournament? What would you like to see most from the next tournament?
Kahlan: If Trio is still around for any future tournaments you can count us in. For the next tournament I wouldn't mind seeing different game modes or rules. Something like restrictions on certain items / guns would be neat as well. The biggest issue for the tournaments and the game that we would like to see are more clan games and less hacking. A tournament where you know for sure that everyone starts on an equal level would be a great start.
Congratulations Trio on your win. And thanks for taking the time to answer a few of these questions. We hope that your insights will help improve the community and teach some people about the competitive side of Cross Fire!
